WHAT HI-FI AWARDS'03 *****
This pearlescent white cable is the top model in a range of three X-Tube designs which all use a central 'air' core around which the wire is braided. The number four in XT-400's name indicates the area in millimetres of, in this case, silver plated copper wire that is used in each conductor. The theory behind X-Tube is that because high frequencies are inclined to travel at the perimeter of each strand it makes more sense to arrange strands in an O shape.
This cable has a perky and precise sound, it's less substantial than alternatives in this group and has a slight preference for higher frequencies which can emphasise the percussive aspects of music. This means that bass is tight and fast with good focus but voices can be a little 'dusty' at times. When you take price into consideration however this is clearly a decent cable and with a more relaxed system it will do wonders to inject a bit of life.
One of the big problems as cable conductor size increases, is how to keep the inductance low. This is vital to reduce cable losses and prevent inaccuracies in the signal transfer process, i.e. distortion. The normal way to do this is to use a number of individually insulated conductors within the cable construction. This method is utilised to great effect in the design of our Genesis Silver Spiral loudspeaker cables. However, this results in a product that has a very high quality sound performance, but is expensive to manufacture and can be difficult to terminate.
To take advantage of this design ethos, but in a more conventional format, X-TUBE forms the conductor in the shape of a tube with an inner aircore. This has the same effect as using multiple insulated conductors and ensures that high frequencies are transmitted cleanly, with the added benefit of ease of termination. This unique tubular conductor geometry also provides lower flux density within the conductors, which gives improved transparency to the sound.
To perform as the designer intended, the cable needs to have the very best termination, as sound quality can be adversely affected by using inferior connectors.
A solder-free, airtight perfect fusion between the two metals of cable and plug. This 'cold weld' method allows the cable and plug to offer the optimum signal transfer and therefore, better sound quality. It also reduces contact resistance and ensures perfect long-term performance.
Even more, a heat shrink will be covered in between the cable and the plug to offer less oxidation.
"Detail resolution is terrific, while subtle background sounds such as the reverb on a voice are crystal clear. The Tonal balance is crisp without any hint aggression, and dynamics are excellent....this cable is a great buy."
